Weather warnings issued for Coquihalla, Highway 3 for snow

Snow surrounds some trees and grass along the Okanagan Connector past Pennask Summit on Sept. 21, 2017.

Winter weather may be lingering around the Coquihalla Highway, Okanagan Connector and Highway 3 this weekend.

Environment Canada issued special weather statements for the three highways today, May 7.

Between now and Sunday, the Coquihalla has the potential for flurries on its high elevation passes. The statement applies to the highway in every direction, from Merritt to Kamloops and to Hope. A weather warning has also been issued for Highway 97C from Kelowna to Merritt.

“Snow levels will remain at or below mountain pass levels in southern B.C. through the weekend,” reads the statement. “A series of disturbances moving across the interior will bring precipitation to the region.”

On Highway 3, the special weather statements were issued for the stretch between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass, as well as Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass.

While snow is expected to be mostly light this weekend, the Kootenay Pass could get more than 15 centimetres of snow between tonight, May 7, and tomorrow.

Any major disruptions to routes will be posted to Drive B.C.
