The first full moon of the year will reach peak illumination this week and there is a night where clear viewing opportunities are possible.

The Wolf Moon reaches its peak at 9:54 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, and will appear full the day before and after.

It 's believed the Wolf Moon was named in colonial times when wolves would howl outside villages. The names of moons are often a mix of terms from European settlers and local First Nations, according to Space.com.

Another name for the January full moon is the Centre Moon, used by the Assiniboine people as it marks the middle of the cold season, according to the Old Farmers Almanac, which also lists more traditional monikers such as Cold Moon, Frost Exploding Moon and Freeze Up Moon to name a few.
