TORONTO - An overnight wind chill of about minus-40 in the Toronto area was causing problems at Pearson International Airport early Tuesday.

WestJet said there was a so-called ground stop in effect in which aircraft were not being permitted to land until 9 a.m. ET.

There was also a backlog of planes waiting for gates to open to offload passengers and long lineups were reported inside the terminals.

A message on the Westjet website said baggage would have to remain on board some flights until ”sometime Tuesday.”

Airlines are urging passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport because of cancellations or delays.

Similar problems occurred at Pearson on Monday, when dozens of passengers were stranded on the tarmac for hours due to a backlog of planes waiting for a gate. (CP24,CFRB)
