Beginning next week, the City of West Kelowna will start flushing the distribution water mains within the Lakeview Water System.

Flushing water mains involves running water at a high velocity through the water mains to refresh the pipes and remove any sediment accumulated within the pipe. While flushing is underway Lakeview Water System users may experience some additional discoloration in the water. Signage will be posted in areas where water mains are being flushed and residents are asked to minimize their water consumption if possible when signs are posted. Should residents notice additional discoloration after flushing is completed in an area, they are advised to turn on their cold water tap until the water runs clear.

Flushing will continue for several weeks weather permitting, and will be resumed in the spring if necessary.

Flushing is being conducted in anticipation of the eventual removal of the Water Quality Advisory that is currently in place for the Lakeview System due to higher than normal turbidity levels. The current Water Quality Advisory that is still in effect recommends that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and anyone wishing to seek additional protection, bring water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute, or use an alternate, safe source of water.

The City conducts ongoing monitoring of the Lakeview Water System and is observing a trend downwards in the level of turbidity in the Rose Valley Reservoir which supplies water for the Lakeview System. The City will advise the public as soon as the Water Quality Advisory is removed.
