Watch out for counterfeit bills in the Central Okanagan

Dozens of counterfeit U.S. and Canadian bills have been passed to businesses in the Central Okanagan in recent weeks, according to RCMP.

There have been 44 documented cases where bogus bills of various denominations have been passed in Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country since Dec. 1.

“Kelowna RCMP hope to prevent further incidents where these fake bills are accepted by unsuspecting retailers in our community,” Const. Solana Paré of the Kelowna RCMP said in a news release. “We recommend that business owners and operators review their policies and ensure that their employees familiarize themselves with the detection of counterfeit currency.”

She recommends that retailers who suspect a fake bill, first of all, ask for a different bill and tell the customer they suspect it may be fake, since the customer may not be aware of it, and tell them to take it to the police for verification.

But retailers should also take note of the details of the incidents, such as time, context, descriptions of the suspect and the vehicle they may be driving.

If you suspect a counterfeit bill or have information about counterfeiting activity you can call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 or Crime Stoppers at www.crimestoppers.net or at 1-800-222-8477.
