WEST KELOWNA - The West Kelowna Warriors couldn’t muster any offence in a penalty-filled affair and a 5-0 shutout loss to the Penticton Vees on Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The Vees got ahead early in the game and on their first shot on goal as well as at the 3:09 mark of period number one it was Ty Amonte getting behind the defense with a left-wing drive and finishing on his forehand on the glove side of Warriors netminder Cole Demers for the goal, giving the Vees a 1-0 advantage.

Penticton doubled their lead at the 5:11 mark, just 2:02 after the Amonte goal as Chris Klack’s pass for the blocker side post defected to the front of the net and a tip from out of mid-air by Vees captain Nicholas Jones gave Penticton a 2-0 lead. It’s Jones 9th goal against the Warriors this season and gives him goals in each of the six games this season against the Warriors.

West Kelowna did hold a big lead on the shot clock after one period of play as the Warriors fired 12 shots toward Vees netminder Mat Robson but the 20-year-old made all 12 saves, including a little help from the post on a Stephen Kleysen shot. Warriors goaltender Cole Demers turned aside two of the four first period shots he faced.

The Vees extended their lead to three goals early in the 2nd period as just 21 seconds into the frame, Nic Jones bumped a pass ahead for Duncan Campbell and his shot from the left face-off circle beat Cole Demers over the blocker side and ending the 17-year-old’s night as the Vees to a 3-0 advantage.

Demers allowed three goals on five shots before being relieved for Gabriel Morency, who turned aside all eight shots he faced in relief in period number two. Mat Robson continued to hold the Warriors scoreless, helped by two posts in the 2nd period as well, as he stopped all 19 shots he faced through 40 minutes of play.

The Vees added to their advantage just 1:22 into the 3rd period of play as Grant Cruikshank fired a shot from the left face-off circle and beat Morency over the blocker side shoulder to push the Vees advantage to 4-0.

Ty Amonte added his second goal of the game at the 16:46 mark of the final frame as a centering feed from Griffin Mendel was whacked into the goal on a second effort from Amonte to give the Vees a 5-0 lead as that would end up to be the final score with the Warriors being shutout for the 2nd time this season.

Cole Demers started the game for the Warriors and allowed three goals on five shots, losing his 16th game of the season while Gabriel Morency came on in relief of Demers and turned aside 14 of 16 shots in his appearance. Vees netminder Mat Robson stopped all 26 shots he faced on the night for his league leading 5th shutout of the season and his 2nd consecutive goose egg.
