LUMBY - A Lumby man who has spent much of his life photographing the northern lights is illuminating viewers on the Knowledge Network.

Yuichi Takasaka appears on the documentary Ambassadors of the Sky this month.

The 45 minute segment can be watched on the Knowledge Network or online, and is described as a look at “the fight against light pollution as amateur astronomers and astrophotographers in British Columbia and Alberta highlight the issues surrounding the disappearing night sky.” Takasaka is one of several experts interviewed for the documentary.

Takasaka is well known for his vibrant photographs of the northern lights, which he has photographed all over the world, including his hometown of Lumby.

Born in Japan, where it is extremely rare to see the northern lights, Takasaka immigrated to Canada in 1989 and first saw the aurora borealis in Yellowknife. He has contributed photos to travel magazines, the National Geographic and even science textbooks.

His favourite places to see the northern lights locally are Silver Star Mountain and Sugar Lake, areas where there is lower light pollution.
