KAMLOOPS — Construction is set to begin next week on a $13 million improvement project in downtown Kamloops.

Extreme Excavating will begin the city’s Victoria Street West Improvements Project starting on Monday, April 15, according to a City of Kamloops media release.

The project will be carried out in four stages and will take place over the next 18 months to two years. The improvements will involve utility replacement, road reconstruction, improved pedestrian access, lighting and landscaping

The City is reminding motorists construction will take place from Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with additional weekend work as required.

One lane in each direction will be maintained throughout the construction zone and speed limits will be reduced to 30 kilometres an hour.

“We are asking motorists to use the zipper merge when approaching the construction zone. Drivers are encouraged to use both lanes until the point of merge and then to take turns to ease safely and smoothly into the remaining lane,” captial projects manager Darren Crundwell says in the release.

Pedestrian access and access to all businesses along Victoria Street West will be maintained throughout the project.

“While every attempt will be made to minimize the impact on businesses, residents, motorists, transit users and pedestrians during construction, delays, and congestion should be expected,” the City says. Special routing consideration has been given for emergency vehicles, transit and local business traffic while construction takes place.

The City has also installed cameras on Victoria Street West near Overlanders Bridge near Seymour Street West to provide motorists with east and west views of the construction corridor.
