The 64th annual Vernon Winter Carnival kicks off Friday with nine days of fun.
The theme this year is Back to the 80s and includes a host of events around Vernon including some highly anticipated free events for all ages. Winter carnival runs until Sunday, Feb. 16 this year.
The iconic Balloon Glow goes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and this year there is a new venue. It's been moved from Polson Park to the parking lot at Kal Tire Place this year. Hot air balloons are going to light up the sky with a fleet of food trucks and games under the glow.
There's also been a change of plans for the Balloon Glow's free shuttle. Originally it was going to run between the Vernon Performing Arts Centre and Kal Tire Place, but a last minute change has the shuttle driving between the arena and the Riviera Divya Sutra Plaza Hotel, formerly the Village Green Hotel.
The Winter Carnival Parade on Saturday has a new route. The floats and bands will parade south on 27 Street from 45 Avenue to 32 Avenue. Parade float enthusiasts can vote for their favourite.
Due to mild temperatures and a lack of snow, the snow sculpture event is now ice carving at the village at SilverStar Mountain Resort. Carver Tyler Welfing is carving five ice blocks into sculptures in 48 hours and people can vote on their favourite on Feb. 9.
Businesses, clubs and organizations are showing off their carnival spirit by decorating to the Back to the 80s theme and awards will be given out for the most inspired decor.
Winter carnival has dozens of events planned from sock hops, to curling, raffles and more.
