VERNON - The City of Vernon has taken the first major financial step towards building a new swimming pool and fitness centre.

City council has approved spending $100,000 to conduct a feasibility study which will look at all aspects of the construction of a new aquatic centre and recreational facility. City council voted unanimously at its meeting today, Apr. 8, for the study which will take 12 months to complete.

A new swimming pool has been widely discussed in the city over the years as the population increases and the pool, which saw its last major refurbishment in 1993, grows older.

According to the City's report, the feasibility study will look at new recreation facilities including a new indoor aquatic facility, gymnasiums, fitness spaces including a walking track, program spaces. It will also consider the enhancement of the current swimming pool.

The study will also look at a location for the facility, as well as gauging the public's willingness to pay for it.
