Vernon Search and Rescue crews are mourning the death of a long-standing member of their team who died suddenly this week.

Jon Ottesen was a member of the rescue group for more than 45 years, and he "wore many hats," the rescue group wrote in a Facebook post, Jan. 8.

He spent time as a SAR manager, team leader, a swift-water team, rope team, ATV and boat team member, among many others including an instructor for various specialties, the group wrote.

"He spent many years on the board of directors, in many different roles and impacted many lives.  He was our go-to and a key part at the heart of VSAR. As a SAR manager, he led his team with dedication.  Compassionate and caring, he wanted the best for everyone and in turn, everyone wanted to be the best. He was a task maker. In his quiet, kind, and thoughtful way, he never complained but set an example. As a team we received many lessons on how to do things right."

Ottesen had a "mischievous sense of humour" and took pride in sharing his knowledge.

"He loved the water, his ATVs, driving backroads and exploring. Jon loved. He made the world a brighter and better place. He was an extraordinary man," the rescue team wrote.

Ottesen's death was sudden and the crew members said they shared in his family's sorrow.

Search and Rescue teams across the Okanagan and in B.C. have been offering their condolences and residents have also posted their fond memories of Ottesen and offered their support to his family online.
