Vernon RCMP warn public of elaborate phone scam

Vernon RCMP are warning the public of an elaborate phone scam in which victims believe the call is coming from the police station and the caller has some of their personal information.

Over the past month, police have received numerous calls from the public where the caller identifies themselves as a federal agent or RCMP officer.

"What makes this call feel real to the victims is that the fraudster already has some of their personal information," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tania Finn said in a media release. "In addition to that, the caller ID on the telephone display is that of the Vernon RCMP Detachment."

Just last month, Kamloops RCMP warned the public about the identical scam making the rounds in that community.

The fraudster then tells the caller they have criminal charges against them or warrants for their arrest and convinces the victim to send money through Bitcoin or gift cards.

The Vernon RCMP is reminding the public telephone fraud exists and they need to protect themselves from becoming a victim.

No legitimate business or government agency, including the RCMP, would ever ask a member of the pubic to transfer funds in Bitcoin or gift cards.

The RCMP says to never give out personal information on an unsolicited call and don’t be afraid to say no or hang up on a call if it's believed to be a scam.
