Vernon RCMP warn of rising propane tank theft

VERNON - The RCMP is reminding people with recreational vehicles to secure their propane tanks following a rise in the number of thefts.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, police are investigating after multiple reports of theft of propane tanks from RVs. The majority of tanks stolen were not secured to the vehicle or left in plain sight.

"When a propane bottle is recovered by police, it is hard to determine who that tank belongs to as there are often no distinguishing marks or serial numbers associated with them. Tracking down a victim and or proving its stolen property is difficult when recovered," Vernon RCMP media liaison officer Const. Kelly Brett said in the release.

"Labelling the tanks with identifiable markings or numbers unique to the owner is a good start in being able to identify the tank if recovered."

RCMP are reminding RV owners to secure propane tanks, including those used for barbeques, or store them out of sight when not in use.

To report a suspicious person or activity call the RCMP non-emergency line at 250-545-7171, or submit an anonymous tip to www.nokscrimestoppers.com or by calling 1-800-847-2222.
