Vernon RCMP report fewer calls to police, more charges forwarded to prosecutors

There were fewer calls to police and more charges forwarded to prosecutors in Vernon so far this year compared to last year.

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP detachment has put out their crime statistics for the first quarter of 2024 and will present them to city council on Monday. The report shows a dip in calls for service, and a large spike in reports forwarded to Crown prosecutors in Vernon.

In the first three months of 2024 there were 345 reports forwarded to Crown prosecutors in Vernon, an 82 per cent increase over the same time frame last year. It is still up to prosecutors to review every case and decide whether to pursue any charges.

So far in 2024 there have been 4062 calls for service in Vernon, a 5.9 per cent decrease compared to last year.

Crime in Vernon in general has been down this year, according to the report. The most common crimes were theft under $5000, assault, and theft from a vehicle.

There was more than a 6 per cent decrease in calls about criminal activity and property crime, however, police received 479 calls about mental health incidents which is 17 per cent higher than last year.
