Vernon RCMP officers save overdosing man's life

VERNON - Police saved an overdosing man in a Vernon last month.

RCMP say two officers were conducting patrols just before midnight on June 9 in the area of the 3400 block of 27 Avenue, when they were approached by a man who told them his friend was possibly overdosing under a make-shift shelter nearby.

The two officers were directed to the shelter where they found a 23-year-old man unresponsive, according to an RCMP media release. Police administered three doses of naloxone and began CPR.

After about ten minutes, the man regained consciousness and was transported to hospital.

"Unfortunately, like many other communities in British Columbia, our officers deal with the effects of fentanyl and it's derivatives on a regular basis," Inspector Gord Stewart says in the release. "Given the work we do and calls for service, our members face the risk of contamination or exposure on a regular basis."

Nalxone reverses the effects of heroin and fentanyl, and RCMP have issued naloxone kits to all on-duty operational members.

"Our ability to possess and administer naloxone gives our members an added level of security for not only their safety but also the safety of the community we serve," Stewart says.
