Vernon RCMP investigating discovery of fetal remains

FILE PHOTO

VERNON - Police in Vernon are investigating the discovery of fetal remains over the weekend.

Police were called to an apartment building in the 1900 block of 31 A Street on Saturday, April 7 after fetal remains were found, RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett says.

She would not comment on any further details, such as where the remains were found, if the case is considered suspicious or if charges could be possible.

“The RCMP is not releasing any further information at this time as they investigation is still ongoing,” Brett says.

The B.C. Coroners Service was notified of the incident, but spokesperson Andy Watson says it is no longer investigating.

“While this incident was reported to the B.C. Coroners Service, it does not meet the mandate for investigation under the Coroners Act,” Watson says.

He said it is rare for the Coroners Office to receive reports of fetal remains.
