Vernon RCMP investigating after firearm pulled during break-in

An investigation is underway after a man pulled a firearm on a Vernon resident who discovered him breaking into his garage.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, the incident happened when the Mountridge Road resident returned home at roughly 8:20 a.m. Jan. 8.

The homeowner had only been out briefly and when they returned they discovered an unknown person in their garage. Police say when the homeowner approached the suspect he produced a firearm before fleeing in a black SUV which was waiting nearby.

"Frontline officers from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to the area immediately, however, the suspect vehicle was not located by police," Vernon North Okanagan RCMP const. Chris Terleski said in the release. "We appreciate the emotional impact this event may have had on those involved and are thankful that no one was injured. Be assured that every effort is being made to identify and apprehend those responsible."

The suspect is described as a First Nations male, wearing black clothing, a black ball cap, and a bandana covering his face.

Police are urging anyone with information, who they have not already spoken with, to call the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171.
