Vernon RCMP arrest woman in connection to alleged mail, lawn ornament thefts

A 45-year-old Vernon woman is facing charges after the RCMP arrested her in connection to a string of mail package and lawn ornament thefts.

Between Sept. 9 and Sept. 11, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP received several reports of thefts from residential properties in the Vernon area. Unknown suspects were targeting unattended mail packages and ornamental lawn displays.

A member of the public provided police with video surveillance from one of the thefts and police were able to use it to identify the vehicle used for the crimes and the suspect, according to an RCMP news release.

On Sept. 12, an officer found the suspect's vehicle travelling on 25 Avenue. The officer initiated a traffic stop and recognized the driver as the suspect from the video.

The police officer arrested the driver and a search of the vehicle resulted in additional alleged stolen property being recovered.

The woman faces charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property. She was released from custody pending her next court appearance, RCMP said.
