The Vernon Pickleball Association is offering newbies a chance to try out the sport for free and is actively encouraging young people to get involved.
The Vernon Pickleball Association is holding the free orientation day on June 13, at the Okanagan Wealth Advisors Pickleball Complex at Marshall Field. The club that has over 450 members says pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America.
While the sport has a reputation as being for a more senior crowd, the Vernon club is keen to see young people get involved in the game and has reserved a category for six to 17-year-olds, as well as another spot for family groups. All equipment needed is provided by the Vernon Pickleball Association for free.
A Vernon Pickleball Association media release says the clinics are a great way to learn about the sport and to "jump on board the pickleball craze."
The Vernon pickleball courts opened in August 2018 and the club is certainly passionate about the sport. Concerns over the operation of the pickleball courts led to pickleball players filling almost every seat at Vernon council meeting in April 2019, with club president Rob Irving making passionate pleas about the courts' future.
In 2018 passionate pickleballer Lane Roberts took the Vernon Pickleball Association to court after they gave him a lifetime suspension. Unfortunately for Lane, the judge said she couldn't force the volunteer association to restore his membership and he lost the case.
Anyone wanting to attend one of the free one-hour clinics must pre-register by email at Vernonpickleball@gmail.com no later than June 11. The clinics take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and drop-ins will not be accepted.
