A mural designed and painted in honour of former Vernon Coun. Dalvir Nahal is nearly complete.
Nahal died last year after a long battle with cancer.

Brigitte Red, executive director with Gallery Vertigo, North Okanagan Artists Alternative, said the process to get city approval was the most lengthy one for the mural that took a little more than two years. It was created as part of the gallery’s The Sunflower Skirts exhibit running in September and October.
“She really shown a light in the community in terms of community participation and getting the community excited about things that were going on in town and we just thought she had done a lot for the community culturally and art wise so as a gallery, we thought that would be a good way to honour her,” Red said.
It was created by Vernon artist Michelle Loughery and still needs to be glazed but is otherwise complete. It took about a week for Loughery to paint it, along with random members of the public who stopped by.
“They asked if they could help and so they were handed a brush," Red said.
The mural was self-funded and did not use any city funds, she said. You can see the sunflower mural on 28th Avenue on the 105.7 Pure Country radio building.
“Each piece is an artist’s interpretation of a personal immigrant story or that of a friend, reflecting their journeys in Canada,” according to the gallery’s website.
