Vernon man in stolen Kamloops pickup nabbed trying to shoplift

What started as a shoplifting investigation at a Vernon business ended with a suspect in handcuffs for vehicle theft and possibly drunk driving.

Officers were called to a report of theft at around 2:50 p.m. Monday, March 18, at a business in the 5000 block of Anderson Way in Vernon, according to an RCMP media release.

RCMP don’t identify the business.

A man and a woman left the store without paying for items and were seen loading them into a pickup truck in the parking lot.

Police arrived and contained the truck before it could leave, RCMP said. The pair were taken into custody.

The pickup had been stolen out of the Kamloops area.

A 29-year-old Vernon man was handed a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition after he wouldn’t provide police with a breath sample. He’s also facing charges of theft and possession of stolen property.

He was released from custody after his first court appearance.

The woman was released without any charges.
