A Vernon filmmaker's ode to Spider-man will get its big-screen premiere next week.

One year after the pandemic kiboshed the original premiere of "Spider-Island," a spider-man fan movie, it will have its debut at Vernon's Towne Cinema for one night only Nov. 17.

The film was shot around Vernon in 2019 by Spider-man fan Mitchell Vanlerberg as a love letter to the super hero's creators, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, who died a few years ago.

Vanlerberg, who plays Peter Parker in the movie, spent four months filming with help from 18 volunteer actors and a crew that consisted mainly of him and his dad.

The film follows Peter Parker four years into being Spider-Man but wanting to get rid of his powers and be normal again. However, residents of Manhattan mysteriously receive similar spider-powers and our hero is now tasked with making a choice on whether to finally get rid of his responsibility to the city or not.

"The core of the film is about responsibility and always trying to do the right thing despite the odds," Vanlerberg says in a media release. "Those values are reciprocated in real life by trying to help out the community."

All profits from the movie will be donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Spider-Island will be screened at the Vernon Towne Cinema Nov. 17, for one-night-only at 5:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. To purchase tickets go here.
