A Vernon graduate isn’t going to have to worry so much about how to pay for school next year.
Grade 12 student Dezirae Bond from Clarence Fulton Secondary School was awarded a Beedie Luminaries scholarship worth $40,000.
She is one of 157 B.C. students this year to receive $6.2 million in scholarships from philanthropist Ryan Beedie.
The Beedie Luminaries scholarship program supports students who demonstrate strong academic potential, are involved in their communities and have faced life challenges with determination and optimism, according to a news release.
The scholarships are worth $40,000 for students pursuing a 4-year undergraduate degree and $15,000 for students pursuing a 2-year college diploma/certificate or trade-school foundation program.

In addition to receiving financial assistant the recipients are also paired with mentors and offered paid work opportunities, Stay on Track student support, invitations to special events and access to the Beedie Luminaries online community.
This year’s Grade 12 recipients come from 81 high schools in 30 communities, with 38 per cent being the first in their immediate family to pursue post-secondary education and 55 per cent coming from single-parent or legal guardian families.
Students who are interested in applying to be part of next year’s cohort are encouraged to visit Beedie Luminaries, the application period for the 2023 cohort will open in fall 2022.
