One person was transported to hospital with smoke inhalation after a fire caused significant damage to a Vernon property early this morning.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services were dispatched to a single-storey home in the 3600-block of 25 Avenue at 1:10 a.m. Jan. 11 and found heavy smoke coming from the front of the property.

"Crews advanced on the fire and quickly contained it to the front portion of the house," Vernon Fire Rescue Services Deputy Chief Alan Hofsink said in the release. "The house sustained significant smoke and fire damage. When crews arrived, all occupants of the home were already outside and one person was transported to hospital for smoke inhalation and undetermined injuries."

A City of Vernon media release says fire crews contained the fire and confirmed that the fire didn't spread to other parts of the structure or adjacent properties.

The residents of the home will be displaced for a period of time and have been offered assistance through the Emergency Support Services program.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation.
