Vernon firefighters extinguish deck fire

Vernon Fire and rescue Services

One person was transported to hospital with minor injuries and smoke inhalation after a house fire in Vernon that started on the deck yesterday evening.

According to a City of Vernon media release, at roughly 5:30 p.m. yesterday, May 19, firefighters received multiple calls about a fire coming from a house in the 4100 block of 20 Street.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, one of the property's tenants was using a garden hose in an attempt to put out the fire. The fire, which had started on the deck had extended to the roof. Firefighters quickly put the fire out, minimizing damage to the building and stopping the flames from spreading into the roof.

"The good news here is that because of the fast and diligent work of the tenant and our firefighters, the majority of damage was contained to the exterior of the house and the back deck. There is some smoke damage inside the home, but the tenants will be able to get back inside this evening," deputy chief Dwight Seymour said in the release issued last night.

One person was transported to hospital with minor injuries and smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
