Vernon cyclist dies after collision with SUV

A 52-year-old Vernon cyclist has died following a collision with a vehicle in Vernon on Friday.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP are investigating the circumstances of the collision that took place at 4 p.m. Friday, April 8, on Kalamalka Lake Road near the intersection of Pottery Road.

"The investigation has determined the cyclist was attempting to cross Kalamalka Lake Road through heavy traffic and between intersections when they were struck by a small Jeep SUV driving north," a Vernon RCMP media release says.

"The cyclist, a 52-year old Vernon man, was ejected from his bike and was transported from the scene by BC Emergency Health Services. Sadly, he was later declared deceased at hospital."

Vernon RCMP says the Jeep's driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

"Our thoughts go out to the victim’s family and all those who witnessed this tragic event," Vernon RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said in the release. "Thank you to all of those who remained on scene and attempted to provide life-saving assistance to the victim."

Police say the investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available at this time.
