Vehicle torched again at Kamloops mayor's dealership

The fire at Tru Market burned on Oct. 10, 2023, burning the same vehicle as a previous fire nearly a year ago.

A vehicle burned for a second time at a Kamloops auto dealer's lot this morning.

Firefighters were called to the mayor's lot at Tru Market Auto around 7:18 a.m. today, Oct. 10, where the SUV and a dumpster on the next door property which each burning.

The SUV on Kamloops mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson's lot burned nearly a year ago and the same charred vehicle now burned a second time.

On Oct. 19, 2022, his surveillance cameras captured a man walking away from the property and across the street as the fire began to glow off screen.

It's not clear what caused today's fire but Kamloops Fire Rescue acting platoon captain Joe McKinnon said it's being treated as suspicious. He also said the nearby dumpster, which was burning when firefighters arrived, is believed to have been lit separately.

Kamloops Fire Rescue and RCMP are investigating the blaze.

Hamer-Jackson isn't sure if he's being targeted. When asked, he said "anyone could be." He questioned why City-funded security services are not closer to businesses at the centre of Victoria Street West.

Security services, paid for by the City, currently park closer to First Avenue, where the Kamloops Friendship Centre storage lockers are and a homeless day space run by the City is. Hamer-Jackson's dealership is closer to the bridge, across from two shelters and a supportive housing site.
