Vees Stoykewych named to Canada West

PENTICTON – The Penticton Vees Jr. ‘A’ Hockey Club is pleased to announce defenseman Paul Stoykewych (95) has been named to the Team Canada West roster for the upcoming 2013 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge (WJAC) in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

President, General Manager an Head Coach Fred Harbinson, “We are very excited as an organization for Paul, as this is an opportunity for him to compete against some of the best players in the world. We wish Paul and the Canada West team luck in the upcoming tournament.”

Stoykewych, 18, is one of only two returning members of last year’s silver medal winning squad. The Winnipeg, Manitoba product is in his first season with the Vees, after coming over from the Winnipeg Blues this past off-season. Stoykewych has two goals and seven points in 16 games this season and has logged big minutes on the Vees blue-line. This will be the third time Stoykewych has played on the international stage, as he was of member of Team Canada West in 2012 and played for Team West at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Prior to joining the Vees, Stoykewych spent two seasons with the Winnipeg Blues in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, where he played in 131 career games, picking up 10 goals and 60 points.

Stoykewych is the 19th Vee to suit up for Team Canada West and 22nd to play in the tournament (Canada West & USA).

Team Canada West’s first game at the 2013 WJAC is on Monday, November 4th when they face-off with Switzerland. Team Canada West is in Group ‘B’ and is joined by the Czech Republic and the Swiss. The playoff round starts on Thursday, November 7th with the Quarter-Finals, followed by the Semi-Finals on Friday, November 8th.
