The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is adding a couple of high-tech safety features to Highway 3 just in time for winter driving.

The Ministry is installing a variable speed limit system on a seven-kilometre section of Highway 3 between Hope and the junction with Highway 5. The speed limit system will use data from road and traffic sensors to recommend lower speeds when weather conditions turn adverse.

Four new signs are being located along the stretch with one sign in each direction featuring a digital message providing drivers with additional information when lowered speed limits occur.

The variable speed signs are part of a larger, $25 million project that includes a new congestion based variable speed limit system on Highway 1 between Human River Bridge in Abbotsford and Prest Road overpass in Chilliwack.

“Weather conditions can change very quickly where the highway starts climbing from the Fraser Valley towards the mountains,” Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson Claire Trevena said in a press release.

“That’s why we are bringing in this new variable speed limit system, which allows us to slow traffic down and improve safety on Highway 3 this winter,” Trevena said.
