The Latest: 2nd person faces murder charge in trooper death

WHITEVILLE, N.C. - The Latest on the investigation of the fatal shooting of a North Carolina state trooper (all times local):

1:35 p.m.

A prosecutor says a second person is facing a murder charge in the fatal shooting of a North Carolina state trooper.

Columbus County District Attorney Jon David said 18-year-old Chauncy Askew was arrested early Tuesday in South Carolina on a charge of first-degree murder.

Authorities say Trooper Kevin Conner was shot last week by the driver of a pickup truck during a traffic stop on a rural North Carolina highway. The Highway Patrol has identified Raheem Cole Dashanell Davis as the driver, and he also faces a first-degree murder charge.

David said Tuesday that Askew was also in the truck, but didn't elaborate on what role he played in the killing. David said Askew was being held in South Carolina and would be brought to North Carolina soon.

The district attorney's office didn't immediately respond to an email asking if Askew has a lawyer.

Prosecutors say a second person has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper during a traffic stop last week.

The Columbus County District Attorney's Office said in a statement Tuesday that a second suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of Trooper Kevin Conner. District Attorney Jon David planned a news conference on Tuesday to provide more information.

Conner, an 11-year veteran of the patrol, stopped a pickup truck last week on suspicion of speeding on a highway in rural Columbus County southwest of Whiteville. Patrol First Sgt. Michael Baker said the driver shot Conner as he approached.

Raheem Cole Dashanell Davis, a 20-year-old from Chadbourn, was later apprehended. He's charged with first-degree murder.
