'Love Letters' to close on Broadway on Sunday without Stacy Keach, Diana Rigg, Martin Sheen

December 09, 2014 - 8:09 AM

NEW YORK, N.Y. - "Love Letters" has been returned to sender — A.R. Gurney's play will close on Broadway this Sunday, leaving some big stars high and dry.

Producers said Tuesday the show at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre will end after just about 100 performances, though a national tour of Gregory Mosher's production will launch this fall.

The early closure means Broadway audiences won't get to see Stacy Keach, Diana Rigg, Anjelica Huston and Martin Sheen play roles in the Pulitzer Prize finalist. So far, Brian Dennehy, Mia Farrow, Carol Burnett, Alan Alda and Candice Bergen have appeared.

The play is made up of letters, Christmas cards, birth announcements and notes between a woman and a man over decades, starting in 1937. We see their friendship and budding romance deepen, from birthday parties to high school dances and rare meetings.

The show, which started Sept. 18, has usually been making less than half of its $780,840 weekly potential and only once was more than 70 per cent full.
