Original Publication Date November 22, 2016 - 9:55 AM

MIAMI - Authorities say two universities in South Florida were on lockdown for several hours following a shooting that injured a man.

Miami news outlets reported the shooting took place shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday near the front gate of Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens. The man, shot in the leg, was taken to a Miami hospital for treatment and his condition wasn't available.

Florida Memorial and nearby St. Thomas University immediately went on "lockdown," meaning students were not allowed onto or off of the campuses. The lockdown was lifted about 1 p.m.

In an email to students, officials at St. Thomas said they'd been notified that police were searching for an armed suspect in the area. No arrests had been made by midafternoon but officers had left the university area.
