Police: Man critical after exchange of shots with 3 officers

October 16, 2017 - 7:58 AM

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Authorities say three police officers in Alabama who answered a domestic violence call exchanged shots with an armed man, leaving him in critical condition.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steve Anderson told The Tuscaloosa News the 39-year-old man refused police instructions to raise his hands and get down on his knees when the officers arrived at a house in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night. Anderson says the man pulled out a handgun and shots were exchanged. No officers were hurt and Anderson says the officers fired in self-defence.

The man, who wasn't identified, was taken to a Birmingham hospital with life-threatening wounds. Anderson says the domestic violence call involved the man and his girlfriend but he didn't elaborate.

Anderson says the officers will be placed on administrative leave until an investigation is complete.
