NEW YORK - The Metropolitan Opera is playing host this week to an audience very different from the kind that usually buys tickets.

The company, which is based in New York City, is sponsoring a 40-minute opera written specifically for children ages 6 months to 18 months old. And judging by a performance Tuesday morning, the babies seem to love it.

The piece, titled "BambinO" with a capital O at the end for opera, was written by Scottish composer Lliam Paterson, who said he tried to incorporate into the music the sounds that babies make and the sounds that opera singers make.

The work, commissioned by the Scottish Opera, is being performed 10 times this week free of charge in a small auditorium inside the Met.
