PORTSMOUTH, Va. - A 16-year-old boy has been convicted of trying to kill a Virginia police officer.
A jury on Friday found Will Patterson Jr. guilty of all 12 counts against him, including attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated malicious wounding.
Prosecutors said Patterson shot and seriously injured Portsmouth Officer Angelina Baaklini in November when she approached him after recognizing him as a reported runaway. Patterson was 15 at the time.
Baaklini was struck by five bullets. She testified that she still suffers from nerve damage and has been unable to return to work.
Patterson's lawyer acknowledged to the jury that Patterson was responsible for the shooting, but noted his young age and said there was no evidence he acted with premeditation.
Patterson will be sentenced July 10.
