Jonathan Schell, anti-war activist and author of 'The Fate of the Earth,' dies at 70

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Jonathan Schell, the anti-war activist and author of the prize-winning "The Fate of the Earth," has died.

Schell's companion, Irena Gross, told The Associated Press that he died of cancer Tuesday at their home in New York City. He was 70.

Schell wrote several books but was best known for "The Fate of the Earth." It was published in 1982, drawing upon years of stories he had written for The New Yorker. "The Fate of the Earth" was a major text for opponents of the nuclear arms race and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
