NEW IBERIA, La. - State police say a south Louisiana sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who came at him with a knife after a standoff.
Master Trooper Brooks David (DAH-veed) says the shooting occurred about 1:30 a.m. Sunday in New Iberia, which is about 115 miles west of New Orleans.
He says the suspect was 40-year-old Shannon Labit (lah-BEE) of New Iberia. David did not release the Iberia Parish sheriff's deputy's name.
David says that, according to the sheriff's office, Labit had stabbed two people earlier at another home.
He says he doesn't know how long the standoff lasted.
David referred other questions to the sheriff, who could not be reached. The shift lieutenant on duty did not return a phone call.
Deputies patrol New Iberia because the city doesn't have a police department.
