BOSTON - Massachusetts' only Confederate memorial will be removed after Columbus Day weekend.
The Boston Globe reports that the memorial will be removed from Georges Island and temporarily placed in storage at the Massachusetts Archives.
The granite memorial was erected on the island in 1963 by the Boston chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It commemorates 13 Confederate soldiers who died while imprisoned at Fort Warren during the Civil War. It will remain in storage until it can be returned to the group.
The monument had previously been boarded up. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker called for its removal in June as other states pushed to remove Confederate memorials. The Republican governor says the Confederate memorial and others like it don't "support liberty and equality."
