Racist graffiti found at Kansas City church

October 29, 2017 - 3:18 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Authorities are investigating after someone defaced a Missouri church with racist graffiti and set a small fire inside the building.

The Kansas City Star reports an ethnic slur and the letters "KKK" were painted on the windows of the predominantly black Concord Fortress of Hope Church in Kansas City, Missouri. The vandalism and break-in happened early Sunday.

Officials say someone lit a chair on fire inside the church's financial office, but it was quickly extinguished by sprinklers. A vending machine also was broken into.

The incident is being investigated by Kansas City authorities and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Worship services continued as scheduled Sunday.

Kansas City Councilman Quinton Lucas attends the church. He says the incident is heartbreaking but it won't define the church.
