KAMLOOPS - The East Shuswap Road wildfire has had crews up all night fighting the blaze.
The fire is now at 545 hectares after the burn operations were carried out yesterday, July 14. Jody Lucius, spokesperson from BC Wildfire service says this growth was anticipated due to the burn operations.
Today, Lucius says there are four water tenders, two helicopters and 103 personnel continuing to cool hotspots along the fire's perimeter.
Burn operations reinforce fire guards and remove fuels in areas that are unsafe for crews to access.
The East Shuswap Road wildfire is still being classified as "out of control" though burn operations were carried out yesterday, July 14. Lucius says they have to be absolutely sure the fire is under control before they will change the status to, "held." Weather conditions and hot spots along the perimeter still have the potential to allow the fire to spread, though it is not necessarily a cause for panic.
The Environment Canada special air quality statement for the South Thompson region continues today, as smoke billows from the Kamloops wildfire.
This may affect people with pre-existing health conditions, the elderly, infants, children and sensitive individuals who are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.
