UPDATE: Arson suspected in Shannon Lake golf course clubhouse fire

Shannon Lake Golf Course will have to make due this season after fire destroyed the clubhouse early this morning.

UPDATE: 3:08 p.m. May 13, 2013

The fire at West Kelowna's Shannon Lake golf course has been deemed suspicious.

RCMP received a report the clubhouse, located at 2649 Shannon Lake Road was on fire at about 1 a.m. May 11.  Firefighters tried to contain the blaze but the clubhouse was destroyed.

An overnight fire has left golfers at West Kelowna's Shannon Lake golf course without a clubhouse, but the course remains open.

General Manager and head professional John Jacoby says the fire started between 1 and 1:30 a.m. and appears to be a complete write-off. He said the cause of the fire is still being determined but it did not start in the kitchen. Arson has not been ruled out.

Meanwhile, golfers have 13 holes to keep them going. They are playing holes 6 through 18. Jacoby is using a makeshift clubhouse and using smaller buildings to make up for the loss of revenue.

"It's frustrating because we were looking forward to a great year, the weather just turned and the course is in great shape... but we will get through it," he said.

The course is owned by members.
