Unpredictable northern lights may be visible in Okanagan, Kamloops

The northern lights can be seen from Skaha Lake glowing over the mountains in the April 12, 2016, file photo.

Intense auroras may be in the skies above the southern Interior tomorrow night, but poor weather is likely to prevent the spectacle from being enjoyed tonight.

AuroraForecast.com is predicting the Northern Lights will reach 10 out of 10 on a scale of activity tomorrow, March 31. On April 1, activity is forecast to remain strong at eight out of 10. Astronomy North projects there is a 65% chance of the aurora being active in the evening and an 85% chance overnight.

"Watch for periods of active auroras above the northern horizon and overhead, with peak activity expected in the hours before and after local midnight," Astronomy North predicts for tonight.

It will be a challenge to see the Northern Lights in Kamloops as Environment Canada is predicting it will be cloudy tonight, March 30, and tomorrow, March 31. Chances are looking dim in Vernon as well, where showers are in the forecast tonight and tomorrow.

In Penticton and Kelowna, some showers and rain are in the forecast for tonight but skies will only be partly cloudy tomorrow.

Across Kamloops and the Okanagan, the forecast for the clearest skies tonight appears to be at Apex Mountain Resort near Penticton.

For shorter-term aurora predictions with the option to select by region, the federal government shares forecasts up to six hours here.
