KELOWNA - There could be 20,000 people at UBCO by 2040, including 18,000 students.
That’s almost double the nearly 10,000 students attending the university this year. The economic impact on the Okanagan is expected to more than triple to $4.8 billion a year from $1.5 billion today.
Those are some of the numbers from a report from UBCO called Shaping UBC Okanagan's Future that's going to Kelowna City Council on Monday.
It was 2005 when the former Okanagan University College gained formal affiliation with the University of B.C. At that time, the student population was about 3,500.
In order to accommodate the new students, $452 million in new construction will be needed.
New programs suggested in the report include aerospace and software engineering, occupational and physical therapy and health management.
