A Clearwater resident took a stunning photo of the awe-inspiring Helmcken Falls in Wells Gray Provincial Park earlier this week.

Ellen Helset Ferguson fell in love with the falls when she was young, and still enjoys visiting them throughout the seasons.

Despite the dreary and overcast day on Jan. 25, Ferguson decided to snap a photo of the falls.

“We took a drive up Tuesday afternoon,” she said. “This is taken from the standard viewing platform about a two minute walk up the trail from the parking lot. The roads and trails are very well maintained, you don’t have to be a mountaineer to enjoy the experience.”

Ferguson remember fondly the first time she saw the waterfall during the winter. She was a teenager in 1970.

“We walked in on the crust,” she said. “By then a big ice cone that forms under the falls was starting to melt and when it melts it cracks. It sounds like thunder. It was very interesting to see and hear.”

Vernon's Chance Breckenridge took a photo from behind the 141 metre waterfall on Jan. 3 of this year with the help of skilled friends, ropes and ice climbing gear.

The photo was taken with a cell phone from a natural bowl behind the falls that has been eroded by water spray over time.
