WEST KELOWNA - Police have released video surveillance footage and are searching for two suspects in the apparent theft of a valuable personalized wheelchair. Police are also looking for one unknown woman, who may have had contact with the two suspects while they were leaving the store.

Last Wednesday, Oct. 26, police were alerted to a possible theft of a personalized wheelchair worth about $3,000 from the Louie Drive Walmart.

The suspects left with the wheelchair while the victim, from Summerland, was shopping and using a motorized cart provided by the store.

Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says in a release that video footage captures one man entering the store in a wheelchair and leaving his chair to use a motorized chair. The second man comes in on foot and is seen when the first suspect climbs into the motorized chair. Later, the second suspect is shown taking the victims wheelchair and helping the first suspect into the chair. The second suspect then pushes the first out of the store in the stolen chair.

"In reviewing the video surveillance footage, it appears as though the suspect knowingly left the store in someone else's mobility aid device, while leaving his own behind," O'Donaghey says in the release. "Of course, there is a possibility that the suspect was confused and mistook the victim's mobility aid device for his own."

When the two suspects were leaving, a woman in a black and white checkered sweater is seen waiting for the use of the motorized chair. Police are interested in speaking with her.

Police say the first suspect, in the wheelchair, is male, possibly First Nations, with long dark brown or black hair, wearing a plaid jacket, black toque, blue jeans and brown shoes.

The second suspect, who was walking, is male, is possibly First Nations, with long dark brown or black hair, with a full goatee, wearing a tan/beige coat with hood, black shirt, light blue jeans and white shoes.
