Two suspects arrested after series of suspicious grass fires in West Kelowna

West Kelowna RCMP arrested two men connected with two different grass fires in the area, but there are four other fires still under investigation.

Officers responded to a grass fire near Carrington Road and Gellatly Road around 11:40 a.m. on Sept. 16, according to a press release from police.

Officers arrested a 36-year-old man shortly after the fire and he "admitted ownership of the fire" in a statement, RCMP said. A recommendation for a charge of mischief under $5,000 will be forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service.

A separate fire near Dobbin Road on Sept. 13 is still under investigation, but police arrested a 32-year-old man connected to the blaze.

There are four other recent suspicious fires that police are investigating.

“Intentionally setting fires creates a significant risk to our community and first responders,” Cpl. Devon Gerrits said in the release. “We want the public to know we are actively investigating these incidents and remain committed to holding those responsible accountable.”

Anyone with information about the fires has been asked to contact West Kelowna RCMP 250-768-2880 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
