Two more BC nurses have been disciplined for stealing drugs from hospital and care settings, bringing the total to at least eight nurses caught for similar activity this year.

In two decisions published May 17, the BC College of Nurses and Midwives didn’t identify either nurse or where they practiced because they disclosed the theft and agreed to sanctions and treatment plans.

In the first case, the nurse not only took narcotics from the facility they worked at between December 2021 and May 2022, but also from patients. It says the nurse used the drugs while not on duty. The nurse disclosed the theft and drug use and the college said there is a good likelihood of success in a treatment plan. The nurse was given a one-month suspension as well as conditions on their licence.

The second nurse took narcotics for nearly five years for off-duty use.

"They entered their workplace while off work in order to withdraw narcotics under patient names, used the security pass of another person when their own was deactivated, and misrepresented their health in order to get a peer to insert intravenous access,” the college investigation found.

That nurse was also diagnosed with “a disability with a causal relationship to the practice issues.”

The nurse was suspended four weeks and cannot return to work unless abstinent and medically cleared, among other conditions on their licence.

The college said in both instances, it is “satisfied that the terms will protect the public."
