Two missing after storm capsizes kayak, fishing vessel on Vernon lakes

Two people are missing following separate boating incidents that took place on lakes in Vernon last night.

A kayaker is missing from Kalamalka Lake, along with a commercial fishing captain whose boat overturned on Okanagan Lake.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, Vernon Search and Rescue responded to both incidents after calls came in at 11 p.m. yesterday, July 24.

In the case of the missing kayaker, the man was paddling with a group when a storm blew in.

Facing rough conditions the group managed to make their way to the west side of Kal Lake. The man then left the group to paddle to Kal Beach but didn't arrive.

He has not been seen since and his kayak has been recovered.

Separately, on Okanagan Lake, a commercial fishing vessel capsized near Ellison Provincial Park. The boat was towing a smaller vessel when a storm blew in and high waves and strong winds caused it to overturn.

Vernon Search and Rescue and an RCMP boat searched for the man who was operating the boat, but he has not been found.

"Concurrent searches have been organized and are underway on both Kalamalka Lake and Okanagan Lake, utilizing both Vernon Search and Rescue and RCMP resources," Vernon RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said in the release. "These are both terribly unfortunate events and our thoughts are with the families during this difficult time as we continue our search for their loved ones."

No other information has been provided by police.
