KELOWNA - Two people were pronounced dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 33 in Kelowna early this morning.

A grey Pontiac Montana minivan was travelling east on Highway 33 when it crossed both lanes of traffic and hit a tree near Bryden Road at around 5 a.m. today, Aug. 26, according to an RCMP news release.

A woman in the front passenger seat and a man in the rear passenger seat died. The driver, a 45-year-old man, was seriously injured and was taken to Kelowna General Hospital where he’s listed as stable.

“This investigation is still in its early stages as members continue to determine how this collision occurred,” Const. Lesley Smith from the Kelowna RCMP said in the release. “Police have yet to confirm the identity of the deceased occupants of the vehicle and are requesting anyone who may have witnessed the event or can assist with this investigation to please contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.”

The scene of the crash will be closed for several hours. Investigators are looking for potential witnesses and any video surveillance.

Highway 33 at Bryden Road was closed in both directions for several hours as investigators worked, although detours were available via Daves Road and Gerstmar Road, according to Drive B.C.
