Two people are facing perjury charges related to a 2019 manslaughter trial in Kamloops.
James David Bond, 33, and Sara Anne Hupe, 42, were arrested Aug. 9, as a four-year police investigation came to a close, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.
Kamloops RCMP didn't name the victim, but Bond was acquitted of a manslaughter charge in a 2019 jury trial, when he was accused of killing 42-year-old Sean Dunn more than two years earlier.
“The recommendations to proceed with perjury charges followed a lengthy investigation led by our Serious Crime Unit, and relate to accusations involving the intent to mislead justice," Kamloops RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley said in the release. “The charge is not one we see commonly put forth and was the result of the hard work and efforts of our Kamloops team."
The pair were arrested on Vancouver Island, but police haven't revealed much about their alleged lies during the trial.
Dunn died after an altercation outside The Duchess on Tranquille Road in December 2016.
He and Bond met on the night of the incident, Dec. 30, 2016, and police were directed toward Bond from the beginning.
Bond was initially charged with second-degree murder, but it was later up to a jury to consider the lesser manslaughter charge. He was acquitted in March 2019.
Bond and Hupe, who were dating at the time of the incident, are not yet scheduled to appear in court, according to online records.
“Thanks to the assistance of our police partners on Vancouver Island, both warrants were quickly executed and the investigation will now continue to proceed through the court process,” Sgt. Nestor Baird of the Serious Crime Unit said in the news release.
